Google Launchpad in India – Google Startup Mentorship Programme

Google will bring its startup mentorship programme Launchpad to India in November. This is a testimony of the start up ecosystem in India & the thriving business opportunities for start ups. Company has identified 10 start ups as part of the launchpad & will be held in Bangalore between Nov 3 to 7. This will help start ups build at scale & Google is planning to do it on a monthly basis in a year or two from now.

CoSight, iReff Technologies, Smart Pocket & others are some of the part of the start-ups. Launchpad started in Israel and several such programs have been held around the world. Several big IT companies are providing start up programs in India & this has helped start ups to get the necessary technical & entrepreneurial support to scale up their operations.

Indians spend 3 hours 18 minutes a day on their smartphones – Ericsson Report on Indian Mobile Market

Ericsson ConsumerLab Insights has a report on the usage of apps & smartphones in India and how it is changing the Indian consumers smartphone habits and expectations about mobile broadband performance. The study was carried out in April-June 2014 among 4000 smartphone users across 18 urban cities in India. Some of the findings of the study are

1) 1/4 of users check their phones over 100 times daily.

2) Indians spend 3 hours 18 minutes a day on their smartphones.

3) 1/3 of this time is spent using apps, a 63% increase in the last 2 years

4) 68% of all mobile minutes on smartphones are used at home

5) Half of all mobile broadband issues faced by users occur while they are indoors in dense urban cities.

6) 76% of existing mobile broadband users are willing to pay more for a guaranteed better mobile internet experience.

India has the lowest average Internet speed in Asia-Pacific – Akamai State of the Internet Report 2014

Akamai has released the state of the internet Report for Q1 2014. Some of the imnportant findings of the report are

1) South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong have a top position globally & regionally while India had the lowest at 1.7 Mbps.

2) In terms of mobile connectivity, in the Asia-Pacific region, Japan had the highest average connection speed at 5.7 Mbps, while India had the lowest at 1.3 Mbps

3) In the Americas, the US had the highest average connection speed at 10.5 Mbps, while Bolivia had the lowest at 0.9 Mbps.

4) In the EMEA region Switzerland has 12.7 Mbps, while South Africa had the lowest peak connection speed at 10 Mbps.

Xiaomi India’s Official Website goes live

Chine Smartphone Maker Xiaomi has launched its Indian website at mi.com/in . The website doesn’t have any information about when the products will be launched in India & how it will be sold. They also have an official facebook India page & can be liked from their Indian site. Xiaomi recently hired Manu Kumar Jain as the General Manager for India. They have set a target of 100,000 likes for their facebook page & this is also shown on their Indian website. This is a clever move by Xiaomi to connect with the Indian fans first before launching the product.

Xiaomi is known globally for affordable & great Android phones & has created a unique brand name globally. Mi3, RedMi, RedMi Note are some of its products & currently sells in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia. It mainly sells through its website & its products have a great demand globally.
