Moms are becoming more tech savvy with lots of gizmos like Mobile, tablets, Smartphones, Camera’s & others. Bingads Industry Insights has an article on how mother’s day tech related gifts are gaining a popularity. One survey found that 64 percent of women said they would prefer a digital camera over half-carat diamond stud earrings. Electronics is now the 3rd most popular mother’s day gift.

Top tech gifts purchased were tablets (46 percent), smartphones (27 percent), computers (20 percent), cameras (13 percent) and e-readers (11 percent). In 2013 mother’s day sales hit nearly $20.7 billion, an increase of 11.3 percent over 2012..

Social Media, ecommerce, mobile & other areas has resulted in many startups going for IPO. Facebook, twitter & others are some of the noteworthy startups who have gone for IPO. Many of the startups are now valued at $1 billion or more. Facebook purchased startups like Instagram & Whatsapp, Yahoo purchased tumblr & others. These startups have been valued at billions & millions of dollars.

Xiaomi from China and Dropbox from the US are at the very top of the list followed by palantir, jingdong & others. Startups from US, EUrope & China are in the top 10 list. With the increase in the values of these startups, VC’s make a good ROI when the stakes are sold or the company gets listed.

IBM Watson Mobile Developer Challenge – Watson Powered Apps

At the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, IBM CEO announced about the IBM Watson Mobile Developer Challenge. You can submit the proposal at the IBM Watson Mobile Developer Challenge webpage. Developers submit their proposals & their plans for a new Watson powered mobile app. It will be judged by a panel of judges & 25 finalists receive access to Watson APIs to build working prototypes.From this, top 5 finalists will pitch their concepts in a live session. 3 winners will have IBM mentoring support and sandbox access to build the Watson powered app. Watson won Jeopardy in 2011 & mobile apps can take advantage of Watson’s cognitive computing capabilities to develop smarter apps.

Interbrand’s Best Global Brands 2013 – Apple, Google, Coco-Cola, IBM, Microsoft, GE & others

Apple has gained the top spot in Interbrand’s Best Global Brands report. Coco-Cola, which has been in top spot for the last 13 years, has taken the 3rd spot. Google is in 2nd position. This is for the first time in the report that Coco-Cola is not in the top spot. Apple has seen a phenomenal growth in the last few years thanks to iPhone & ipad sales. Many tech companies like IBM, Microsoft, Intel are in the top 10 list.

This report is published annually identifying top 100 best global brands. This year, the total value of all 100 Best Global Brands is USD $1.5 trillion. Apple, which was in #36 position in 2000 with a brand value of $6.6 Billion is now at #1 position with $98.3 Billion. Google’s “Hummingbird” Search Algorithm Update

Google has overhauled its search algorithm to answer complex & longer queries from web users. Amit Singhal, senior vice president of search, announced on Thursday that Google launched updated algorithm “Hummingbird” about a month ago & it currently affects 90 percent of worldwide searches via Google.

Google used to match keywords with the web sites to provide results & as the search is getting complex over the years, this new algorithm would be able to handle complex queries. With the exponential growth of web across desktop, mobile, smartphone, tablets & others, search is evolving rapidly. This week marks the 15th anniversary of Google. Larry Page and Sergey Brin set up shop in the garage of Susan Wojcicki in September 1998 & Susan Wojcicki is now a senior Google Executive.

Google is trying to keep pace with the rapid growth of internet. Google previously had made Caffeine, Panda, Penguin & other updates. But the “Hummingbird” update is a very important algorithm change & this has been done after a very long time.

Adobe’s “Digital Distress: What Keeps Marketers Up at Night?” – A Report

Adobe has released a study titled “Digital Distress: What Keeps Marketers Up at Night?” which reveals how marketers are feeling about Digital. The survey covered 1000 US marketers with a 95% confidence level & margin of error is +/- 3.1% for the sample. Some of the findings of the survey are

1) 76% of marketers think marketing has changed more in the past two years than the past 50 years.
2) Only 44% say marketing dept. have a great deal of influence over their Company’s overall business strategy
3) Only 40% think their company’s marketing is effective
4) Just one in three marketers think their companies are highly proficient in digital marketing
5) 61% of all marketers think that digital marketing approaches are a constant cycle of trial & error
6) 66% of all marketers state companies won’t succeed unless they have a digital marketing approach.
7) Cross channel marketing is a stronger driver of success among digital marketers
